Swim Team News ~ Week of April 29

Jennifer Curran

WEEK OF APRIL 29, 2024

Dear Swim Team Families,

Wow, what an exciting flurry of volunteer activity over the last four days. Thank you to the amazing families who signed up for volunteer jobs. MVP’s swim team would not be possible without 100% family participation. It takes a village, and we appreciate you.

Importantly, mad love goes out to Volunteer Coordinator Sara Megson and Webmaster Extraordinaire Bonnie Parisi. Helping 170 families across the finish line is no small undertaking. They sacrificed their day jobs and family time to get this done for our team. Thank you, Sara and Bonnie.

Drum roll please…..and big props to Belle and Steve Hammond for outfitting our team in style again this year…MVP’s Team Store is OPEN and accepting orders. Important - the ordering window closes on Sunday May 12. Do not miss the opportunity to buy yourself some hip MVP gear to wear at swim meets, like the new straw hat, MVP slides, or blue crewneck. Show your Marlin pride!

Remember that all swimmers receive a team shirt and an OMPA shirt as part of their registration (if they register by May 12) so there is no need to buy them shirts unless you want extras.

Families are asking - where are the swim caps that I ordered? Not to worry, swim caps are shipped separately from suits.

“In School” season practices continue this week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The age group times are below and on www.mvpswimteam.com. If your child is registered for the swim team, they can join In School practice. If your child is registered as a Mini Marlin, practice starts on Monday June 3.

A reminder to please commit/decline to May 18 Time Trials at Miramonte High School. The event is 9:00am-1:00pm, with an arrival time of 8:15am. If you would like your child to swim, you must commit to the meet, otherwise they will not be added to the meet sheet. Mini Marlins do not swim at Time Trials. More info on how to do this is below. Feel free to reach out with questions.

Time Trials on May 18 at Miramonte High School:

Time Trials is on Saturday May 18 from 9:00am-1:00pm (arrival time is 8:15am) at Miramonte High School. Time Trials is the first “meet” of the season, but it involves only our team. It gives each swimmer an opportunity to swim all of the events to establish base times and gives the coaches information to begin scheduling meets. It is important for all swimmers (except for Mini Marlins) to attend. Swimmers are encouraged to swim all events, but will not be required to swim an event they are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with.

For new families: swimmers will be at time trials from 8:15am (arrival time) to 1:00pm (the approximate ending time of the meet). Each event runs through every age group before the next event starts– IM ~ 7/8-15/18; Freestyle ~ 6U-15/18; Breastroke ~ 6U-15/18; Backstroke ~ 6U-15/18; Butterfly ~ 6U-15/18.

Mini Marlins do not swim in Time Trials. Please note that your swimmer does not have to swim an event they are not comfortable swimming in. We know that many of our new swimmers will be in various stages of learning how to swim the different strokes. Our coaches enter swimmers in the events that are most appropriate for their skill level.

Commit/Decline to Swim Meets:

Did you know that all of the season’s swim meets are already in the Events section of www.mvpswimteam.com? If you know your summer schedule, you can edit your swimmer’s declaration for each meet of the season.

To sign a swimmer in or out of a meet on www.mvpswimteam.com: On the homepage scroll down to Events and click on More Events. All meets will appear in a list. Click on the Edit Commitment button for a swim meet, select your swimmer, and change the declaration to “declined” or “committed”.

If you are new to swim team, guidance on how to do this is in the Swim Team Handbook on page 14. Generally you need to commit/decline to a swim meet at least 5 days in advance and 2 weeks in advance for invitationals. Deadlines are on the 2024 Swim Team Calendar. Get in the habit of editing commitments well in advance. If you do not edit your swimmer’s commitment by the deadline then they will not be entered into the meet.
